Mukhi House Residents

The Mukhi House was home to four generations of Mukhi family members at different times from 1921-1957. The Mukhi joint family consisted of a grandmother, two sons, and their wives and children. Furthermore, there were several servants over the years (including Budho, Sampat, and Udho) who lived in the servant's quarters located in the basement at street level.

Five children (Ram, Indru, Jagdish, Lilu, and Koshu) and two grandchildren (Kanta and Chandru) of Gobindram Mukhi were born in the Mukhi House, three children (Tilly, Gordhan, and Hassi) were married, and four adults (Ami, Jethanand, Laxmi, and Gobindram) died while they were residents of the home.

The house hosted important public figures including Jawarhalal Nehru (first prime minister of India) with his immediate family, and Lady Rama Rao. In addition, the House was used to entertain Muslim, Indian, and British politicians in the upstairs living room, which was decorated with lush carpets, bronze and ivory statues, and flowers from the Mukhi Garden located in the general vicinity.

Geneology of the Mukhi Family Residents

Geneology

The above geneology of the Mukhi House residents requires two trees because, as was a commonly observed custom in Sindh, when Laxmi Mukhi the first wife of Gobindram Mukhi died, he married her sister Putli Assoomal. Jethanand also had two wives (who were unrelated to each other), and his second wife Savitri and daughter Hassi were residents for a brief period in the Mukhi House.
